Welcome to another round of Top Ten Tuesday hosted by the lovely The Broke and the Bookish! TTT is a bookish meme where every week bloggers are given a theme and post their own top ten lists.
This weeks theme is Top Ten Fairytale Retellings! I love fairytales, and I do love retellings (if you couldn’t tell from the amount of Sherlockians I’ve had this past year), but I haven’t really read very many fairytale retellings. Beastly (Beauty and the Beast) was one of them, but it was just an okay read. So to really amp up this weeks Top Ten list, I’m stretching mine a bit and going for a Top Ten Myth Retelling!
Now, these are myths/legends I really wish more people knew about or that were just plain out retold for the heck of it. Here’s my list, and don’t forget to add to it in the comments or add the link to your own TTT!
1. Hua (Fa) Mulan
Who doesn’t like the Disney version of Mulan? But there’s more than one version of Mulan; the first being a ballad in which Mulan battled in the war for twelve years! One version has her going home after the war, one has her committing suicide afterward because she has been promised to a foreign prince, and one has her dying by her general’s side in battle. Retellings of any of these would make my day!
2. Le Morte D’Arthur
This is kind of cheating, because there are retellings of Arthur and his knights everywhere. BUT, what I would really, really like is a steampunk-ish retelling. I’ve always been able to picture Merlin as a mad old man tinkering with devices in a secluded part of the castle with a clockwork Merlin-bird on his shoulder.
Cat-Skin is a Grimms fairytale, believe it or not. The Queen dies, and the King starts leering at the Princes who looks a lot like her dead mother. The Princes delays their marriage by telling her father to make her a dress like the sun, a dress like the moon, a dress like the stars, and a coat made from the skins from all the beasts in the kingdom. Then she runs away to a neighboring kingdom and ends up marrying their prince, of course. But Cat-Skin is one of my favorite Grimm tales and it’s very underrated. There’s so much potential a retelling of this story could have!
4. The Snow Queen
I want a modern YA retelling of this so much! How can Gerda get Kai back after he lost his emotions to the evil Snow Queen?! Why is the Snow Queen so hateful in the first place, and picking on Kai? Gah, someone needs to work on this now.
5. The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
I’ve been in love with this story for a long time. An elderly couple have never had children, and the man is cutting bamboo and finds a baby in one of the stalks. The baby grows to be the most beautiful in Japan and he hides her away from all the people as if she were a princes. Suitors come but she denies them, giving them impossible tasks to complete. Eventually (in one version) the Emperor comes for her and she flees to Mt. Fuji, then returns to the moon (heaven) from where she was sent. I want a retelling with maybe a story on why she kept refusing the men; maybe she had a commoner she was already in love with? I don’t know. There’s so many possibilities with this story.
