Katya leads a normal life any teenager would be envious of - popular, pretty and dating the high school elite. Not she enjoys the spotlight, mind you. She wants everyone to believe she is normal.
But when Katya sees the real reason behind the earthquakes plaguing everyone in Boston, the truth rattles and shatters the perfect normal illusion Katya created for herself. An ability to see unearthly creatures and manipulate waves of life energy labels her as anything but normal. And it's an ability that attracts unwanted and dangerous attention.
She reluctantly finds herself in the company of Gregor, a handsome member of an international spirit military team called the Kyrios. Her simple decision to help thrusts Katya in a world of the undead spirits, betrayal and a perpetual battle between undead monsters and the wardens that keep them in their place.
Katya must decide whether she values the simple and easy life she created for herself over the complex and difficult world now asking her to stand and fight.

This is a perfect book for anyone who enjoyed the manga/anime Bleach!
Katya is not a normal teenager. She can see things that cross between worlds that normal people cannot see. She’s headstrong- if not a bit stubborn- and loyal to family and friends. During the duration of the book she not only struggles with learning to use her new found powers to save the world, but she struggles internally with rediscovering herself and her part within world of Kyrio.
Gregor is a hot Scottish death-god. He has a temper (of a Scott) and can be quick to anger, but also has a very teasing sense of humor. He seems slightly different from the other Kyrio which is probably why he and Katya click so easily.
The book is full of interesting secondary characters that bring the story to life, and killer enemies that stay hidden in the shadows and keep the reader guessing just who is on which side. The Quad is a group of four Kyrio charged to guard Katya and end up being a highlight of the story. But there are also some characters, such as Katya’s boyfriend, that seem to be written in just an agenda to work in Katya and Gregor’s relationship.
A requirement for being a Kyrio seems to be extraordinary good looks- as each guy described is undoubtably hot. I would have liked to have seen a few more normal-ish looking Kyrio as apposed to the super-mega-foxy-hot (not that I didn’t enjoy all the super-mega-foxy-hot!).
The plot was easy to follow and has a nice flow. There’s no space where the book became too dull or draggy, and despite all the newness of the world there isn’t any information dumps. Well done. The action is well thought-out even though I think it could be a bit more descriptive, especially when Kyrio and Want powers are being used. The ending left plenty of room open for the next installment with a clear view of some of the struggles they will be facing. Will I be picking it up? Yes!
My hopes/expectations for the next book? A broader view of the Kyrios’ world and their distinctive powers, seeing a Want come into being, more of The Quad, and of course a bit more romance from Katya and Gregor!
