I started last year with the NaNoWriMo Writing Prompts, helping out you crazies that have decided to go on this month long journey. The first writing prompt I start with is music. For the last several years, especially with young and new adult novels, it’s been a trend for the author to include a music track at the end of the book or post a music track that can go with the book on their website.
Music is a big part of our lives and inspires, motivates, and gives us energy to create. The songs I’ve selected to include go along that theme. Some have lyrics, some are just music. Some aren’t even in english (but do include subtitles).
The point is that maybe one of the songs will inspire, motivate, or give you energy to create when you hit a block during your creative process; not to give you material to your actual book. I have tried to include songs of all genres, hopefully to keep you in the mindset of your writing.
Don’t forget to leave a comment if you’re participating this year; what genre? Do you have your idea already? Participated before or first time? Words of advice? Good luck!
If you’re looking for a certain kind of song for inspiration I might be able to help, so just leave it in the comments. I kinda have a diverse sense of music, so there’s a chance it might be stuffed somewhere on my computer.
Osric Chau w/Louden Swain – Lose Yourself (90s rap redo; inspirational for trying to achieve a goal that seems beyond your reach)
Miyavi – Guard You (Japanese artist, english lyrics; lyrics lean toward a lost romance be could be taken as a platonic relationship; MC left love behind to ‘guard’ them)
The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing – This House Is Not Haunted (Steampunk artist, spooky and on the edge of if supernatural is real or can just be proven away by scientific facts.)
Disturbed – The Sound Of Silence (If you haven’t heard this one yet, where have you been?! Dark, but somewhat soothing. Hints about separation of society and loneliness amongst crowds.)
Ayreon – The Day That The World Breaks Down (You can’t have sci-fi without Ayreon! Perfect for space battles. Listen as our heroes contemplate their fates and strive for the impossible)
Within Temptation – Stand My Ground (symphonic rock though it reminds me of Celtic for some reason; good for a modern fantasy)
