It might be hard to believe, but I do come from a military family. My dad was a sergeant in the army during Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s- having to leave 4-year-old me and my two older sisters at home with my mother. It’s not easy at all for soldiers in times of peace or war. For my family, my dad not only worked for the army but also worked offshore. He was gone two weeks at a time and when he was home he had drills at the armory to attend. During the war, my mom was left with three girls by herself for A YEAR. This was before the age of internet and cell phones, and talking to my dad on satellite phone cost around $25 a minute so mostly we had to wait for good ole’ snail mail.
My uncle and my cousin were both career workers for the Air Force. My uncle has retired but continues to work with the Air Force as a civilian. My cousin now works with cyber intelligence after a parachuting accident left his knee injured. He himself has been deployed twice.
Last year our community was devastated when we received word that one of our men would not be making it home alive. He was newly married and left both grieving parents behind.
So, this Memorial Day, when you’re with your family by the pool with the grill going, don’t forget the men and women who dedicated their lives for such a simple joy. Say thank you to our vets and shake the hands of our brave soldiers who leave their families behind so yours can be safe.
IN FLANDERS FIELDS POEM
The World’s Most Famous WAR MEMORIAL POEM
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium
