Gifting for Booklovers & Geeks
I’m a HUGE geek and bibliophile. Sometimes it’s fine because those two merge quite nicely. Other times they throw fits and slam the doors on each other. Growing up as the only geek/booklover in the fam, my parents and siblings would always pull their hair out trying to think of things to get me when my simple answer would be, “books”. I wasn’t lying. I wanted books! We lived an hour (before we had internet access *ahem*) away from the nearest bookstore! Once-twice a month trips wasn’t cutting it anymore.
But it can be hard shopping for a geek or a bibliophile because we do tend to be a bit picky about our products. If I were to receive an autographed Star Trek: Next Generation complete DVD collection I would throw it in the dumpster proclaiming that Klingons should never be allowed on Federation starships! Give someone else a copy of Twilight and they’ll tell you vampires don’t sparkle.
So what do you get your geek/booklover? Here’s my helpful (not so helpful?) list.
Electric Tea Kettle
I absorb a ridiculous amount of hot tea a day. It’s a wonder that I still don’t have one of these little things at home (though there is one in my office). See if your geek/booklover likes hot tea. This kettle and and few special teas might be the perfect gift.
Laugh all you want! Sharpies are a great gift. My dad has gotten me a pack for Christmas for the past three years! You can never have too many Sharpies. And they’re made in all sorts of styles and “limited” edition colors.
Socks are a big thing now. Mismatch them- put a little bacon on your bookworm or show people you play both sides with a power punch of Geek/Nerd. I have two drawers full of socks that I mismatch and it’s become a running joke with my family. Find out if their favorite fandom has socks.
Yes, DVD sets! Give your best bud the last season of that show he/she keeps rambling on about when you’re only half listening. Or, if you’re a really great friend, buy that super extended edition with the limited edition figurine and all the extra footage and they’ll love you forever.
The Booklovers Ed. of the last gift, book sets! Does your friend keep hinting on and on about a series that you should start reading? Even if they own all the books, chances are the sets have added more information. I had to buy Lord of the Rings again after the movie came out simply to have the pretty maps. I don’t suggest movie version of books, though. Most booklovers hate those.
No, this is not a horrible, impersonal idea. I like gift cards very much, thank you, and as long as it’s from somewhere I actually shop I’m fine with it. So where does your friend buy books? Go grab a card. It’s better than cash because it says, “Hey, I would buy you a book, but you probably have all you want preordered from now till next Christmas, so here’s a card incase something interesting comes along before then.”
Okay, so maybe you do want to get a little more personal for your booklover. This might be just the thing! You can customize the book embosser with pictures, names, initials, even logos (the company has to check logos to make sure it works). You can even get more than one plate for the embosser if there’s ever a need to (husband and wife?). This has found its way onto my own personal wishlist.
