Series: Gotham Academy Vol. 1
Published by DC Comics on June 23th 2015
Genres: Comic, Graphic Novel, Mystery, Superhero
Gotham City's most prestigious prep school is a very weird place. It's got a spooky campus, oddball teachers, and rich benefactors always dropping by...like that weirdo Bruce Wayne. But nothing is as strange as the students!Amazon •
Like, what's up with Olive Silverlock? Is she crazy or what? Where did she go last summer? And what's the deal with her creepy mom? And how come that Freshman Maps is always following her around? And is she still going out with Kyle? P.S. Did you hear the rumor about the ghost in the North Hall?!

“This place has an impenetrable history. These walls are built with even older stones. Every stone has a story… but not every story has a happy ending.”
Olive Silverlock’s mother isn’t well, and something happened over the summer but Olive can’t remember everything. The confusion puts a strain on her relationship with Kyle, her boyfriend, when school starts back. Olive is a character that’s always stepped on by others, but not because she’s weak- she just chooses not to fight back, until she gets sick of a certain girl in the school.
Maps (Mia) Mizoguchi is probably going to be a favorite character of many readers. She’s the younger sister of Kyle and a close friend of Olive. It seems her favorite pastime is exploring and *drumroll* mapping out places, so when Gotham Academy’s secrets include hidden passages she’s a lovely squealing ball of energy. Maps is completely geeky, seeing gaming references in just about everything, and doesn’t seem to care what people think of her as long as she has something to plunder with Olive.
Colton Rivera is the sly spy. If you need a lock picked or a file stolen, he’s the one you would go to. He’s really a “cool” laid-back character and really likes his fireworks.
Not very much has been revealed of Kyle Mizoguchi, except that he is protective of his little sister and is willing to put Maps’ safety over his relationship with Olive. Props to the boy.
Pomeline Fritch is a textbook school mean-girl. She has no problems hitting Olive where it hurts; often about her mother. She also has no qualms about breaking school rules.
Heathcliff is Pomeline’s boyfriend (?). He’s an all around nice guy and gets along well with Olive, but works hard to impress Pomeline so gets into trouble following her lead.
There’s a few cameos from Batman to Killer Croc, though I won’t say what their part in the story is, but what really added spice to this mix was the addition of Damian Wayne! I’m a big fan of Damian.
The story involves a group of ‘special’ students that attend Gotham Academy trying to find the ghosts lurking around the campus. The name of the ghost is Millie Jane Cobblepot (ancestor of the Penguin?) who didn’t play by her family’s rules and paid the price. There’s also a huge statue of an owl in front of the library. Coincidence, or a Court of Owls reference for the future?
Little extras are always nice to comics, like how weird the school cafeteria is. One day they’re serving Sweer Potato, Chick Pea & Spinach Curry with Poppadoms, Tuscan Bean Soup with Parmesan and Basmati Rice; the next day it’s an all you can eat pizza buffet. What kind of school is this?!
Overall, Gotham Academy Vol. 1 is a great start to a promising teen comic series!
